Swiss broadcaster SRF Sport is starting the 2018/19 football season with three new experts; among them – Bruno Berner.
Bruno will join fellow former Super League players Michel Renggli and Peter Jehle, who will analyse matches in the top Swiss football league. SRF’s expert Benjamin Huggel will return part of the team of Super League experts.
The new Super League season kicks off on the weekend of 21/22 July 2018. As before, SRF zwei will broadcast a match live at 5.00pm (BST) on Sundays, followed at 7.00pm (BST) by the “Super League – Goool” magazine programme covering all the day’s matches and goals. Analysis of the action in the top Swiss football league will now be provided by former Super League players Berner, Michel Renggli and Peter Jehle, alternating with SRF’s established expert Benjamin Huggel.
Between them, SRF’s three new football pundits have played in around 550 Super League matches, not to mention several hundred games in other national and international leagues and competitions. And it’s not only as players that they are familiar with Swiss football; they have also pursued other footballing activities after their careers as players came to an end.
Bruno, 40, celebrated two Swiss championship titles with Grasshopper Club Zürich, and in Germany he was instrumental in SC Freiburg’s promotion to the top tier of the Bundesliga. In England he played for Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League, also helping Leicester City to move up from the Football Association’s third tier to its second. Born in Zurich, he was part of the Swiss national team at the 2004 European Cup in Portugal. Bruno Berner is currently manager of the Challenge League team SC Kriens.
Michel Renggli, 38, won the Swiss Cup with FC Wil. Other teams he played for during his 16-year football career included SC Kriens, FC Thun, Grasshopper Club Zürich and FC Luzern in the Super League. Originally from Lucerne, he is now talent manager for his home-town club of FC Luzern.
Grasshopper Club Zürich won the Swiss championship twice in the seven years that Peter Jehle, 36, spent there. After spells with Boavista Porto in the Portuguese First Division and FC Tours in France, he spent a total of ten years with FC Vaduz and FC Luzern in the Challenge and Super Leagues. This former goalie, with 132 appearances for the Liechtenstein national team to his credit, is currently director of the Liechtenstein Football Association.
“We have taken on Bruno Berner, Michel Renggli and Peter Jehle as SRF experts to give our Super League reporting fresh impetus,” says Susan Schwaller, Head of SRF Live Sport. “Not only do all three of them have a great deal of experience as players, they also have a thorough understanding of the mechanisms that operate behind the scenes to make football tick. Viewers can look forward to expert analysis, supplemented by exciting details from a variety of perspectives – those of the manager, the talent scout, the field player and the goalkeeper. ”
SRF opens the new Super League season on Sunday 22 July 2018 with the match between BSC Young Boys and Grasshopper Club Zürich. Sascha Ruefer and SRF expert Bruno Berner will present the live broadcast of the game from 4.45pm (BST) on SRF zwei, followed by the magazine programme “Super League – Goool” at 7.00pm.
