Like most of the football-supporting world, I watched in awe as Leicester City reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
Anybody that follows me on Twitter will have seen my message of good luck to my former club ahead of kick-off, and whilst Tuesday night’s game sadly saw the Foxes bow out of the competition, my heart was filled with pride and I was left inspired.
I know Craig Shakespeare very well. He was the assistant manager to Nigel Pearson during my time at Leicester. In that time, we won the League 1 title and reached the Championship play-offs. I’m not surprised that I saw the team play with such heart and desire against Atlético Madrid. They are key values that both Shakey and Nigel instilled in every player at Leicester City; values everybody saw as Leicester won the Premier League.
Now that I am managing myself, the lessons that I have been able to take from being coached by Craig Shakespeare are being put to good use, and the values that were so important to us at Leicester are values that we are working to form part of our culture at FC Tuggen.
At present, we’re in a battle to maintain our place in the Swiss Promotion League. I take a lot of inspiration from what I have seen Leicester City achieve since becoming a Premier League team and the club has provided an example of what is possible to us all at Tuggen. The Great Escape season in particular, which saw Leicester go on an incredible run to ensure their top-flight safety in 2014/15, provides a wonderful example of what can be achieved if a group works hard together.
As I write this blog, we are preparing for a big game away to Cham, who are in mid-table. It’s the first of six huge games, with the gap between us and safety currently six points. A win against Cham will go a long way to helping us reach our objective, before we take on Köniz at home the following week. We have a lot of those five games against teams that are close to us in the league, so we expect very tough tests.
However, with heart and desire, and the inspiration provided by Leicester City, we believe. Foxes never quit – and neither will we.
