Last weekend, my SC Kriens team played SC Cham in the league. The game is a local derby here in Switzerland, but we produced a fine overall performance to secure a 5-2 win. The victory ensured our run of wins extended to four straight games.
Having led 2-0 going into the half-time break, I was pleased that four of the five goals we scored came from our strikers. However, we unfortunately conceded two goals from set pieces, which is something we’ll address.
We were 3-0 up after 51 minutes. In many ways, it was similar to Manchester United’s Champions League game against Basel where Jose Mourinho criticised his team of playing ‘PlayStation football’ after taking a 2-0 lead.
After my team scored their third goal, I felt that we did the same. Is it a natural human reaction to take your foot off the pedal once you feel comfortable? Perhaps. However, If you want to be at the top of any league, you have to go all the way until the very end and show everybody that nothing can stop you – not even yourselves.
Out of the blue, we conceded a goal from a free-kick, before having a penalty decision go against us after one of our defenders was judged to have handled the ball; the spot kick also resulted in a goal. With 10 minutes remaining, we were a goal up, but psychologically you can sense that an equaliser is possible.
Therefore, I was so happy with the character my team showed. Not only did they defend well, they started to attack once again. From there, we scored two more goals almost immediately. Never once did we panic.
Naturally, we’re really enjoying our football at the moment – even if we did play ‘PlayStation football’ for 15 minutes in the game against Cham!
Our next fixture is against Stade Nyonnais on Wednesday 20 September. It’s a huge opportunity to extend our lead at the top of the table to seven points – but I assure you that nobody will be getting complacent for a single second.
